Sixteen-Fold Star
What you seeA sixteen-pointed star on ink, drawn as one continuous gold line that joins every fifth of sixteen points on a circle, the rings of shapes it encloses filled in blue, turquoise and terracotta around a deep blue centre, inside a circle marked with its sixteen divisions.
What it meansSixteen-fold stars are rarer than eight-, ten- and twelve-fold ones in Islamic geometric art, but they appear in carved wood, metalwork and the frontispieces of manuscripts. Because five and sixteen share no common factor, the line visits every point once and closes on itself.
Where it worksA rich, dark plate for a living room, a study or a dining room.
